August 10, 2020: Progressive Produce Issues Recall for Red and Yellow Onions Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

Progressive Produce Red and Yellow Onion Recall News – Progressive Produce has initiated a recall of certain red and yellow onions supplied by Thomson International, Inc.  Thomson International had previously issued a recall on August 1, 2020.

Progressive Produce Red and Yellow Onion Recall Information

On August, 10, 2020, Progressive Produce recalled red and yellow onions supplied by Thomson International due to the ongoing, nationwide Salmonella outbreak.  FDA officials are currently investigating Thomson International regarding this outbreak.

The affected onions were sold at West Coast Trader Joe’s (red onions were sold in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah) and Ralph’s (yellow onions sold in California).  Onions associated with this recall were sold loose in bulk bins.  Affected red onions have a PLU sticker with the brand name “Pacific Gold.”

Retailers that received the recalled onions from Progressive Produce have been instructed to remove any affected product from their shelves and to dispose of any product that is remaining in their inventory.  Consumers who have purchased recalled products are urged not to consume them and to dispose of them immediately.  Alternatively, they can return them to the store for a full refund.

Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Questions or concerns about foodborne illness should also be directed to your health care provider.
