BrightFarms Sunny Crunch Salad Salmonella Outbreak News – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium is linked to BrightFarms Sunny Crunch Salad.

BrightFarms Sunny Crunch Salad Salmonella Outbreak Information

On July 15, 2021, the FDA issued a notice that an outbreak of Salmonella has been linked to BrightFarms Sunny Crunch Salad. FDA, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and state and local partners, are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella linked to the consumption of BrightFarms Sunny Crunch Salad, produced in the company’s Rochelle, IL location. FDA officials are working with BrightFarms to determine if any other products have been affected.

The affected Sunny Crunch Salads are packaged in plastic clamshell containers labeled as “fresh from Rochelle, IL.” This product was distributed in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana. Interview data and shopper card records obtained by the FDA and its partners show that five people ate or bought BrightFarms brand Sunny Crunch Salad before they got sick. To date, eight (8) people in Wisconsin (3) and Illinois (5) have been sickened by this outbreak strain.

Per the FDA announcement:

“If you purchased or used these products, you should use extra vigilance in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces that may have come in contact with the product, to reduce the risk of cross contamination.”

Retailers, consumers, and restaurants should not sell, eat or serve BrightFarms Sunny Crunch Salad. The FDA will issue more information as the investigation unfolds.

About Salmonella

Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness.
