Febuary 11, 2016: Organic Pastures Raw Milk Recalled After Six Children Sickened

After a recall was initiated for Organic Pastures Raw Milk due to potential E. coli contamination, the recalled product continued to be sold in 159 stores in Northern California, according to the California Department of Public Health.

The recalled Organic Pastures Raw Milk was connected to six cases shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157 illnesses in children during the month of January.

E. coli Food Poisoning Information

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infection include severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. The diarrhea may become bloody and can lead to dehydration. There is usually little or no fever. The infection (and its symptoms) will vary from individual to individual, ranging from a mild to a life-threatening illness.

The CDC reports that symptoms of E. coli food poisoning typically begin 3-4 days after eating a contaminated food; however, symptoms may occur anywhere from 1 to 10 days following pathogen exposure.

Organic Pastures raw whole milk, the product affected by the recall, had “use by” dates of 1/23/16 (lot code 20160105-1) and 1/26/16 (lot code 20160106-2).

This is the latest of a string of recalls due to bacterial contamination on various Organic Pastures Raw Milk products. In the past eight years, Organic Pastures has issued six recalls. On September 11, 2008, an Organic Pastures milk product was recalled due to possible Campylobacter jejuni contamination; on November 15, 2011, due to possible E. Coli contamination; on May 10, 2012, for potential Campylobacter contamination; on September 6, 2012, for possible Campylobacter contamination; on October 16, 2015, due to potential Campylobacter contamination.
