December 23, 2019: Almark Foods Expands Company’s Listeria Egg Recall

Almark Foods Expands Listeria Egg RecallAlmark Foods has expanded its December 20, 2019 listeria egg recall to include “all hard-boiled eggs manufactured at the firm’s Gainesville, Georgia facility, including all retail, pillow pack, pouch pack, frozen diced, and protein kit products, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.”  The initial Almark Listeria egg recall was prompted after the CDC announced on December 18, 2019, that the company’s hard-boiled eggs were inked to a multistate Listeria outbreak that had sickened seven people from five different states.

Almark Expands Listeria Egg Recall

According to an Almark Foods announcement, on December 18, 2019, the FDA notified the company that Almark Hard-Boiled and Peeled eggs in pails and manufactured at the Gainesville facility, may be linked to a Listeria outbreak that included “several reported illnesses and one reported death.” The company further stated that a more recent FDA sample taken from the Gainesville facility also matched the outbreak strain, suggesting the possibility that Listeria was still present in the manufacturing facility.

Almark has now expanded its Listeria egg recall to include all product packaged for the retail market that was manufactured at its Gainesville plant that remains within shelf life. This includes egg products with “Best If Used By” dates up through March 2, 2020. All production has been temporarily suspended at the Gainesville plant.

About Listeria

Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) is a type of bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria infection (listeriosis) can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Diagnosis of Listeria Infection

Listeriosis is typically diagnosed through a blood or spinal fluid test to look for, or isolate the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes. In pregnant women, a sample of amniotic fluid may also be tested. If you suspect that you may have contracted Listeria or are experiencing listeriosis symptoms, contact your healthcare professional. He or she can order the necessary lab work to confirm a Listeria infection.
