August 6, 2020: Giant Eagle Issues Recall for Onions Following Salmonella Outbreak

Giant Eagle Onion Recall News – Giant Eagle has pulled all impacted products as of August 1, 2020, per a notification from onion supplier Onion 52.   This is directly related to the recall from Thomson International, Inc. and the ongoing, nationwide Salmonella Newport outbreak.

Giant Eagle Onion Recall Information

Giant Eagle issued a recall for all bulk and bagged red, yellow, and white onions due to their link to the ongoing, nationwide Salmonella Newport outbreak, which has sickened hundreds.  The affected products were sold in stores across Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Maryland since June 6, 2020.  The recall also includes select prepared foods items that included the affected onion products as ingredients sold across the same five states.

Customers who have purchased the affected onion products should dispose of them and can bring a receipt to their point of purchase to receive a refund on their purchase of the impacted onion product.

ABOUT SALMONELLA

Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness.
