June 25, 2021: FDA Outbreak Investigation of Salmonella Weltevreden Linked to Shrimp

FDA Salmonella Shrimp Outbreak Investigation News – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is actively investigating a Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak linked to shrimp.

On June 25, 2021, Avanti Frozen Foods recalled various frozen cooked shrimp products due to this Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak.

FDA Salmonella Shrimp Outbreak Investigation Information

On January 26, 2021, FDA officials collected an import sample of Avanti Frozen Foods shrimp as a routine part of the FDA’s Imported Seafood Compliance Program. The sample was analyzed and showed the presence of Salmonella Weltevreden. In March 2021, this shipment was refused admission into the U.S. and was subsequently destroyed, in response to the positive test. In April 2021, three clinical isolates collected from ill people were reported to be closely linked to the isolate collected from the Avanti import sample.

As of June 25, 2021, there are six clinical isolates from ill people that are genetically matched to the Salmonella sample collected from the import sample. Five of the six ill people were interviewed to determine the food they ingested prior to their illness onset. All five reported eating shrimp. Based on purchase dates and locations for four of the sick people, the FDA’s traceback investigation identified a common shipment of shrimp that may have been consumed by the individuals. To date, the six affected people are from Nevada (4) and Arizona (2), with two having been hospitalized.

Restaurants, retailers, and consumers should not serve, sell or eat recalled shrimp products from Avanti Frozen Foods.

About Salmonella

Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness.
