Cucumber Suppliers Placed on Import Alert

On April 24, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) placed Daniel Cardenas Izabal and Miracle Greenhouse of Culiacan, Mexico on Import Alert. Before either company’s cucumbers are allowed to enter the United States, the firms will be required to show, through laboratory testing, that the cucumbers are not contaminated with Salmonella.

Symptoms of Salmonella Infection

Consuming foods contaminated with the foodborne pathogen Salmonella, can lead to Salmonella food poisoning or salmonellosis. Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food.

In more severe cases, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream and other body sites. This can result in death, unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics.

The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to suffer severe illness.

A Stool Culture May Confirm Salmonella Food Poisoning

If you suspect that you have contracted Salmonella, or are experiencing Salmonella food poisoning symptoms, contact your doctor. If appropriate, he or she can order a stool culture to confirm Salmonella infection. A stool culture can also help link your illness to a specific outbreak and support a food poisoning lawsuit should you wish to seek compensation for your injuries.
