The disease, caused by exposure to Shigella bacteria, typically is characterized by diarrhea (often bloody), fever, and stomach cramps.

Both the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the Pasadena Health Department are investigating the outbreak in an attempt to determine the specific source of the Shigella bacteria.

All 30 of the individuals who contracted shigellosis have recovered, according to the health department. They ate at Souplantation between July 22 and 24. Symptoms of shigellosis may appear a day or two after consuming contaminated food and usually resolve within 5-7 days.
