August 11, 2011: Salmonella Heidelberg Outbreak Linked To Ground Turkey Products

In its August 11, 2011, update of an ongoing Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak, likely linked to eating ground turkey products, the CDC announced that a total of 107 persons infected with Salmonella Heidelberg have been reported in 31 states; and on August 3, 2011, Cargill Corporation recalled approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey products, which may be contaminnated with Salmonella Heidelberg.

The strain of Salmonella Heidelberg responsible for the outbreak is known to be resistant to several commonly used antibiotics increasing the likelihood of hospitalization and treatment failure in infected patients.  The number Salmonella outbreak victims  identified in each state, between February 27 and August 9 2011, is as follows: Alabama (1), Arkansas (1), Arizona (3), California (6), Colorado (2), Georgia (2), Illinois (13), Indiana (1), Iowa (2), Kansas (1), Kentucky (2), Louisiana (1), Massachusetts (3), Maryland (1), Michigan (12), Minnesota (2), Mississippi (1), Missouri (4), Nebraska (2), Nevada (1), New York (2), North Carolina (3), Ohio (10), Oklahoma (1), Oregon (1), Pennsylvania (5), South Dakota (3), Tennessee (2), Texas (14), Utah (1), and Wisconsin (4). 

Public health officials have indicated that eating ground turkey is the likely source of this outbreak; and on August 3, 2011, Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, Springdale, Arkansas, announced a recall for approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey products, because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella Heidelberg.

 The CDC and other public health officials warn that the recalled ground turkey products should not be consumed, and recommend that consumers should check their homes for the recalled products.

On February 6th GoldCoast Salads, based in Naples, Florida placed a recall of their Blue Crab Spread because of testing positive for the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes. 

January 31, 2013: Back To Back Recalls From Whole Foods Infected Salmon
On January 29th, Whole Foods Market placed their second recall in less than a week on Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon due to a contamination from Listeria monocytogenes.
