August 23, 2010: Salmonella Egg Outbreak: Another Farm Announces Massive Recall

On August 20, an additional Iowa company, Hillandale Farms, announced it was recalling 170 million eggs, bringing the total number of eggs recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination to 550 million. The recalled eggs have been implicated in an outbreak of Salmonella enteritis associated with 1,300 illnesses nation-wide.

Wright County Egg, which initially recalled 228 million eggs on August 13, later expanded the recall to include an additional 228 million eggs sold since mid-May.

On Friday, Hillandale Farms, another Iowa producer announced it was recalling 170 million eggs sold under several brand names to grocery stores, distribution centers, and foodservice companies in at least 14 states: Arkansas, California, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin.

The two companies involved in the outbreak share a number of common suppliers, including suppliers of chickens and feed.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between May 1 and July 31, there have been 1,953 cases of Salmonella enteritidis reported nation-wide, many of which are believed to be caused by the recent outbreak.

CDC is collaborating with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as state health officials to continue to investigate the outbreak.  For detailed information about the products involved in the recall, please see the Recall List posted by the FDA.

On February 6th GoldCoast Salads, based in Naples, Florida placed a recall of their Blue Crab Spread because of testing positive for the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes.

On January 29th, Whole Foods Market placed their second recall in less than a week on Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon due to a contamination from Listeria monocytogenes.
