June 25, 2010: CDC Update To Caldwell Sprouts Salmonella Outbreak

As of June 2, 2010, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, reported that a total of 35 individuals with a matching strain of Salmonella serotype Newport were sickened in 11 states as part of a Salmonella outbreak linked to Caldwell Fresh Foods sprouts.

Caldwell issued a recall for its alfalfa sprouts (see Caldwell Sprout Recall) on May 21, 2010.   

The Salmonella Newport cases were reported per state as follows: Arizona (2), California (17), Colorado (1), Indiana (5), Illinois (1), Missouri (1), New Mexico (1), Nevada (2), Oregon (2), Pennsylvania (1), and Wisconsin (2). 

The recalled sprouts had been distributed to a variety of restaurants, delicatessens and retailers, including Trader Joe's and Wal-Mart stores.  Food poisoning outbreaks and recalls related to raw sprouts have become too common, and during the outbreak, FDA reminded sprout producers that the likelihood of Salmonella and other pathogens in sprouts can be reduced by employing preventive controls contained in FDA’s Sprout Guidance.  

Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food.

February 7, 2013: GoldCoast Recalls Blue Crab Spread Due To Listeria Contamination
On February 6th GoldCoast Salads, based in Naples, Florida placed a recall of their Blue Crab Spread because of testing positive for the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes. 

January 31, 2013: Back To Back Recalls From Whole Foods Infected Salmon
On January 29th, Whole Foods Market placed their second recall in less than a week on Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon due to a contamination from Listeria monocytogenes.
