The selling of raw milk in Wisconsin is illegal.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that “from 1998 to 2005, there were 45 outbreaks of foodborne illness in which unpasteurized milk or cheese likely made from unpasteurized milk were implicated. These outbreaks accounted for 1007 illnesses and 104 hospitalizations, and two deaths.”

Despite this information, consumers are still continuing to drink raw milk. In fact, during the last year, several states (e.g., Wisconsin and Connecticut) have seen movements toward changing regulations and restrictions regarding raw milk.  If the regulations in these states are changed, they will be counted as one of the 28 states where raw milk consumption is legal.

The reasons purchasers have for backing raw milk consumption vary from having a better taste to health benefits.  The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) states that these assumptions could prove to be hazardous to your health.  It even has a webpage dedicated to the risks associated with raw milk consumption.

As far as sales go, the FDA states that it has seen no increase in the production of raw milk, proponents of the movement say that there has.  Regardless, the price to pay for this type of milk can be expensive.  The average price for a gallon of milk is $3.17, while raw milk may cost $10.00.
