most of the patties had been eaten by students at four area schools. Only 35 recalled patties remained, according to Susan Sollender, the director of food services for the Jersey City school district.

The call about the contaminated beef patties came on Christmas night, but the patties had been delivered on December 19. On December 26, the U.S. Department of Agriculture inspected those schools that had housed the patties.

No students have become ill with listeriosis, the disease caused by Listeria contamination. But with an incubation period of three weeks, cases may occur.

The beef patties that were voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer after federal investigators, during a routineSourc inspection, found evidence of Listeria were part of microwaved meals consumed by students in pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade.
