October 29, 2007: CDC Updates Number of Salmonella Illnesses Linked with Recalled ConAgra Pot Pies

The CDC issued an update today noting that there have been at least 272 confirmed cases in 35 states of food poisoning from Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:-, which is the strain identified in the recalled pot pies.

The CDC gives the number of pot pie food poisoning cases by state as follows:

Arizona (1 person), Arkansas (4), California (18), Colorado (9), Connecticut (7), Delaware (5), Florida (2), Georgia (2), Idaho (11), Illinois (7), Indiana (3), Iowa (1), Kansas (4), Kentucky (9), Massachusetts (7), Maryland (7), Maine (2), Michigan (3), Minnesota (7), Missouri (18), Montana (6), Nevada (6), New York (10), North Carolina (2), Ohio (11), Oklahoma (1), Oregon (4), Pennsylvania (18), Tennessee (6), Texas (4), Utah (12), Virginia (9), Vermont (2), Washington (27), Wisconsin (24), Wyoming (3).

In addition, the CDC reports that individuals who have been sickened by recalled Banquet pot pies range in age from less than a year old to 89 years of age. The median age of those affected is 18. Furthermore, 51% of those people taken ill are female. While a total of 65 people have been hospitalized, there have been no reported deaths.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food. The illness usually lasts 4-7 days, and most people recover without treatment. Individuals with diarrhea usually recover completely, although it may be several months before their bowel habits are entirely normal. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to suffer severe illness.

On February 6th GoldCoast Salads, based in Naples, Florida placed a recall of their Blue Crab Spread because of testing positive for the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes. 

January 31, 2013: Back To Back Recalls From Whole Foods Infected Salmon
On January 29th, Whole Foods Market placed their second recall in less than a week on Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon due to a contamination from Listeria monocytogenes.
